How Does Dysport or Botox Work?

Over the years, you may have heard about Botox treatment and its ability to reduce the effects of aging and produce other fantastic health benefits.

But what is Botox, and how does it work?

In this article from the expertise of Aviva Infusions, we’ll dive into the world of Botox and answer your questions.

Let’s get into it!

What Exactly Is Botox, and Where Does It Come From?

Botulinum toxin, or Botox, is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It’s the most potent neurotoxin known to man but offers a host of beneficial uses and medical treatment potential.

It was first discovered in 1821 by German scientists and was approved for medical use in the United States in 1989. Since these points in history, this treatment has only gained popularity in the cosmetic and medical worlds.

Botox is used for various medical and aesthetic purposes, including reducing wrinkles, treating migraines and other types of headaches, and even treating urinary incontinence.

Out of the seven distinct types of botulinum toxin, four are used regularly for cosmetic purposes:

Botox

  • Temporarily paralyzes specific muscles, effectively smoothing out wrinkles and creases in the skin.
  • Improves the appearance of forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines between the eyebrows.
  • Takes about 5 – 7 days for results to appear and lasts about 3 – 4 months.

Dysport

  • Very similar to Botox in how it performs.
  • Has a higher diffusion rate, making it ideal for treating larger areas, like the forehead.
  • Takes about 2 – 4 days for results to appear and lasts about four months.

Xeomin

  • Very similar to Botox in how it performs.
  • Takes about 5 – 7 days for results to appear and lasts about 3 – 4 months.

Jeauveau

  • It is very similar to Botox in its performance and is typically used around the eyes.
  • Takes about 2 – 4 days for results to appear and lasts about 3 – 4 months.

How Does Botox Work?

Botulinum toxin works by blocking the release of a chemical called acetylcholine.

Acetylcholine is responsible for transmitting messages from the brain to the muscles. When Botox blocks the release of acetylcholine, the muscles can’t contract.

When you get Botox treatment, a practitioner will inject small doses of the toxin into your skin. The toxin blocks nerve signals from reaching muscles, which prevents them from contracting. This reduces the appearance of wrinkles and gives you a more youthful appearance.

Botox can also treat other medical conditions by disabling the muscles causing the problem.

For example, Botox can be injected into the muscles around the head and neck in people with chronic migraines. This blocks nerve signals from reaching the brain and can help to reduce or stop migraines.

Similarly, Botox can be injected into the muscles around the bladder in people with urinary incontinence. This relaxes the muscles and helps to control leaks.

What Are Some of the Other Benefits of Botox?

Botox is not just for reducing wrinkles! As we stated above, it has a host of other benefits as well:

  • Botox can help reduce the symptoms of many medical conditions, including chronic migraines, urinary incontinence, and crossed eyes.
  • It can also help to improve bladder control and bowel function in people with multiple sclerosis.
  • Botox injections help treat some forms of cerebral palsy.
  • Botox treatment has also been shown to reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression.

So whether you’re looking for a treatment for medical issues or cosmetic enhancement, Botox can be a well-rounded solution — providing countless benefits for a variety of people and situations.

At Aviva Infusions, we can help you narrow down a unique treatment plan when it comes to Botox. We will sit down with you, discuss your goals and needs, formulate a plan, then put that plan into practice in accordance with your unique journey!

Are There Any Risks Associated With Botox?

As with any medical or cosmetic treatment, there are minor risks associated with Botox injections. Some of the most common risks include slight bruising or swelling around the injection site, temporary numbness in the area, dizziness, or fatigue.

Most people, however, experience very few side effects from Botox treatment and find the entire process to be incredibly beneficial for a variety of reasons.

However, if you have concerns, make sure to talk to your doctor before deciding whether or not to get treatment.

How Often Do I Need To Get Botox Injections?

The frequency of Botox treatments will depend on the condition being treated — or the individual’s needs, goals, and preferences.

Most people tend to receive treatment every three to four months for wrinkles.

Some individuals may need to get injections more often — sometimes every two to three weeks for other conditions, such as chronic migraines or cerebral palsy.

A licensed practitioner will be able to help you identify a treatment plan based on your individual situation!

Is Botox Right for Me?

Only a licensed and qualified practitioner or medical professional can determine if Botox is right for you. However, if you’re interested in reducing the signs of aging, preventing migraines, or treating other medical conditions, then Botox may be just what you’re looking for!

Botox is safe when used correctly. However, it’s important to only receive Botox treatments from an experienced practitioner.
